First Theme: Merciful Forgiveness?
John 7:53-8:11 The Woman Caught Committing Adultery
We will look at the problem of the location of the account in the Gospel of John. We will then consider what “adultery” meant at the time, and what Jesus seems to be saying about that and other such matters.

Second Theme: Reflecting on the Real Nature of Jesus
Colossians 1:15-20; John 1:1-18; Philippians 2:1-13
Jesus Christ as the Wisdom that holds all things together; as the Word in the world who brings light to all; as the obedient slave who did not grasp for exaltation, and to whom ultimate exaltation is therefore given.
We will consider not just what these passages mean for how we think about Jesus but also for how we are called to follow Jesus.
[Sunday, August 19, is the monthly Vestry Meeting – no class]

Third Theme: How to Live, What to Do
James 1:22—2:26; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Galatians 5:22-23
Our actions in the light of the gifts of the Spirit, and how we might understand those; and as they result in the fruits of the Spirit, and what those mean for our lives.
We will think about right acting in our relations with others; the basis of our actions in the abilities we have been given or have developed; and how these can be shown in our actions towards others.
